Call for Nominations
Award Criteria and Eligibility
To be eligible for the Harry C. Rowsell Award for Outstanding Service to the CCAC, nominees must have made an outstanding contribution to the goals of the CCAC and have advanced animal ethics and care in Canadian science through outstanding dedication, competence, exceptional performance, excellent service, and/or ingenuity.
The winner is expected to attend the CCAC National Workshop Reception 2020 in Toronto, ON on June 5, 2020, at the expense of the CCAC, and to make a short presentation. The award ceremony will be photographed and those photos will be used by the CCAC in materials such as the CCAC annual report, communiqués to CCAC stakeholders, and on the CCAC website.
Past winners, and active members of the CCAC Secretariat or the CCAC Board of Directors, are not eligible for this award. Nominees may only win once. However, previous nominees are eligible to reapply for the award. In exceptional circumstances, more than one award can be attributed in a given year.
Nominations will be accepted in both French and English. Each nomination must include:
- a completed nomination form;
- a biography of the nominee, focusing on his/her related skills and accomplishments; and
- a letter of support for the nomination (2-4 pages), which should include a statement outlining the specific nature of the contributions that the nominee has made, and how these contributions relate to the mandate, mission, and values of the CCAC.

Deadline for Nominations
All nomination forms and supporting documents must be received by email by February 28, 2020 at 11:59pm EST.
All responses must be typed and in PDF format. Please send completed nomination packages to the CCAC at . Nominations will be accepted by email only.
The CCAC Secretariat will review each nomination to determine whether the nomination package contains:
- a completed nomination form;
- a biography; and
- a letter of support.
All complete nomination packages will then be reviewed by the Harry C. Rowsell Award Task Force, which is comprised of the CCAC Chair and Vice-Chair, a representative from the CCAC Secretariat, and one member each from the Standards, Assessment and Certification, and Public Affairs and Communications committees.
This task force is responsible for reviewing the candidates submitted for award consideration and recommending a winner to the CCAC Board of Directors. Submissions will be evaluated on content and merit, and nominations must demonstrate a strong contribution to the CCAC and to animal ethics and care in Canadian science.
Once the CCAC Board of Directors has approved the nominee, the winner and the person who submitted the nomination will be notified by the CCAC Secretariat. All other nominees and nominators will be contacted shortly thereafter.
Timeline for 2020 Awards

- Notification to winner: April 7, 2020
- Notification to all nominees and nominators: April 18, 2020
- Presentation of award: June 5, 2020
Presentation of Award
The winner is expected to attend the presentation of the Harry C. Rowsell Award for Outstanding Service to the CCAC, which will be held at the CCAC National Workshop Reception on June 5, 2020, in Toronto, ON. The winner will also be expected to say a few words (2-5 minutes) at the presentation. This event will occur the day prior to the CCAC National Workshop 2020.
The award presentation will be photographed and those photos will be used in materials such as the CCAC annual report, communiqués to CCAC stakeholders, and on the CCAC website.
The Harry C. Rowsell Award for Outstanding Service to the CCAC will consist of a personal award, suitably inscribed. The recipient's name will also be engraved on the master plaque that currently hangs in the CCAC office.
The winner's accommodation and travel will be paid for by the CCAC. This includes a one-night stay in Richmond, BC, a one day per diem, and a round-trip flight or train. Should the winner wish to extend their stay to attend the CCAC National Workshop 2020 or for personal travel, all additional expenses will be borne by the winner.
