Humane Science Courses

Several online resources are useful for self-education about humane science:

  • Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) (2003) Experimental Animal User Training Modules
This is a series of web-based modules covering the general core topics required by the CCAC for institutional experimental animal user training programs. Each module deals with a specific topic, and modules are independent from each other. Questions are listed at the end of each module.
  • Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) Enhancing Humane Science - Improving Animal Research . Humane Science Lectures.
This free, online course targeted to investigators provides a broad overview of diverse topics in the practice of, and approaches to, humane animal experimentation. It addresses such issues as experimental design (including statistics and sample size determination), humane endpoints, environmental enrichment, post-surgical care, pain management, and the impact of stress on the quality of data. The self-paced course consists of 12 audio lectures with accompanying slides, resource lists and study questions.
  • Canadian Aquaculture Institute. The Experimental Fish. Institutional Aquatic Animal User Training.
This is an online WebCT training program for people who use fish in research, teaching and testing. The course syllabus closely follows the core topics outlined in the Canadian Council on Animal Care's National Intuitional Animal User Training Program with special reference to aquatic animals. This program reviews the regulatory and ethical issues involved in experimental fish use and the practical aspects of aquatic animal care.
  • Festing M. (2006) Isogenic.info
This website describes steps in the design and statistical analysis of experiments involving laboratory animals to assist investigators in the application of reduction.
